Who Uses Math? An interview project
download the assignment
I interviewed my mom, she is the owner of a laundromat. She uses math at work everyday. The math used is just multiplication, addition, subtraction, and sometimes division. My mom uses a calculator to add up money. My mom is very careful when doing stuff like counting money and giving tokens and things like that, so they only make one or two mistakes a year. Math is very important to the business, because if there was no math, my mom couldnÕt figure out how much clothes weight, and how much to charge for a pound of clothes. Example of the math used: a customer comes in to do laundry. He buys two tokens for the washer and the dryer. One washer token is 1.50. One dryer token is 1.25. He needs two for each, two boxes of soap, and one dryer sheet. He picks up dry cleaned suits and shirts that cost 10.64, but because he is UVA student, he gets a 10% discount.

My dad uses math in his job all day. He uses basic math like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. He uses a laptop and a calculator. A couple of times a day he makes a mistake. The math is very important to his company because he gets paid according to what he sells. An example of how my dad uses math in his work is how to find out how much a hamburger patty costs so he can let his costumers know. So he knows that there are forty patties in a case, and each case is seventeen dollars. What he did was divided forty patties into seventeen dollars. The real answer is .425, so he rounded it and got forty-two cents.

My father is a surveyor which requires him to use different forms of math everyday. Because he has been doing math for 20 years, it is pretty easy for him. He uses both a computer and a calculator to do more work done in less time. He tries not to make mistakes, but it sometimes happens! My fatherÕs line of work requires him to do math all the time and is very important for his company. An example of the math he does: a person has three acres of land. Since an acre equals 43,560 square feet how many square feet does that person own? 43560X 3 = 130,680 square feet.

My dad is a doctor, so he use math a lot. He uses math many time each day. That is because he gets lots of paperwork. If I were you I would wonder if my dad makes many mistakes.
