First Week's Homework: What is a Scientist?
Olivia August 2009
A scientist is someone who has lots of questions and is willing to be patient and go though a lot of testing, trials, research, and failures before finding answers. After all, that is most of their job. A good scientist will always be asking questions, such as, "Could I make something that is fire resistant?" As research starts there will be trials. Trials with putting chemicals on things, and trials with using different materials. If something doesn't work, "How can I make it better?" or "Why would wood be harder to make fire resistant than metal?" A scientist does lots of thinking during their work. They have to think of lots of ideas until they find one that works. A big part of finding answers is trial and error.

A scientist is somebody who creates things. They have long white lab coats that protect them from acid and stuff. They work in very dangerous environments. Sometimes they have dangerous tasks. Sometimes scientists have their very own coworkers. Some scientists have very long schedules and some scientists have short schedules. You have to be really really really smart to be a scientist. Scientists get paid way more then teachers. I would rather be a teacher. Teachers get to boss kids around, get paid, and get to use the teacher's lounge. A scientist doesn't get to do that. I also want to be a teacher because teachers don't need to wear those stupid white lab coats. Teachers don't always need coworker, or helpers. Some scientists use lasers, teachers never use them.

What does a scientist do? Scientists need a nice working area to proceed in their work if they are going to get anything done. If you are a scientist you should make around $25000 to $100000 from companies like UVA, Boston, or Washington. Some people also work for the government. Your coworkers are the people who sometimes work in the same office as you, and they wear long white coats.

Imagine stepping into a sterilized laboratory where scientists dressed in lab coats are at work with chemicals of all kinds. Scientists are very busy people that work year round. The ones that work for chemical or make-up companies make a lot of money. A scientist's daily task are testing chemicals and studying some species or another. We owe a lot to scientists. For instance, if we didn't have scientists then we wouldn't have medicine and lots of people would get sick and die. Scientists have been around for centuries. Today some of our basic scientific ideas come from their thoughts and theories. Scientists are some of the most needed people in this world.

Scientists need a pleasant and spacious working environment if you expect them to get work done. If you are a scientist, you will be communicating and exchanging ideas.

A scientist is a person that has a lot of knowledge and shares it.
