Why Homework?
Independent practice
time to practice skills without support and “figure it out for yourself”
Repetitive practice
to memorize, and to build automaticity and accuracy
Responsibility / organization
maintain a routine and take responsibility for completing tasks
Time extension
Students work at very different speeds. By including home time to complete assignments I can more easily manage the classroom schedule.
How much?
Fifth graders can expect 50 minutes of homework plus 25 min. of reading Monday through Thursday. Weekend homework is generally limited to make-up work, studying, and reading.
Grading – see grading sheet (late homework is graded down)
If homework cannot be completed because of time constraints or academic difficulty, a parent or guardian should jot a short note on the assignment.
I do not accept parent deliveries of routine homework. Why? If a child does not have homework there are two problems: 1) the missing homework 2) the lack of organization/responsibility. A parent delivery solves the first problem, but reinforces a continuation of the second problem. The first problem is a minor event. The second problem is a life skill.
